Five thousand five hundred and fifty-five pengs live on the Shelf — a slab of old ice drifting on Robinhood Chain.
It is bright up here. It is loud up here. Nobody stays up here.
Every peng is born under a light and keeps it for life.
Sunset, Ocean, Lime, Candy — the glow is the first sky the egg ever saw. You can tell where a peng was hatched by the colour it carries. You cannot tell where it has been.
Ten percent of the Shelf is above the water.
Everything worth knowing is below.

The first winter took one peng and did not give it back.
It is still down here, in the first cave, frost in every feather, perfectly calm. It says the cold is only cold if you argue with it.

There was a colony here once.
The ice closed over it in a single night. If you stand very still you can see them, faint as breath — and one of them can see you.

Went under in the Great Thaw.
Came back with the tide, a little green, very hungry, oddly cheerful. Do not lend it your fish.

The oldest peng on the Shelf never left the ice.
It stopped needing feathers a long time ago. It remembers every egg that ever hatched, including yours.

Under the ice there is a vent, and under the vent there is a peng that decided warmth was a personality.
Pengs come down here to thaw their feet. They leave quickly.

Nobody knows what the hoard is for.
The peng guarding it does not spend it, does not count it, and does not blink. Try to take one coin and you will learn what a peng’s beak is actually for.

Something from the surface world fell through the ice a long time ago and kept working.
It learned to waddle. It learned to glow. It is still learning what a fish is.

The chain skipped a block here, once.
The ice remembers. So does the peng that was standing on it — it is in two places at the same time and neither of them is comfortable.

One egg saw all twelve skies at once.
Nobody has explained how. The peng that hatched from it does not explain anything. It just walks past and every glow in the room changes colour.

At the bottom of the ice the water runs out and the stars begin.
There is a peng down there that has never been to the surface and has never needed to. It waves. Wave back.
Every peng starts as an egg.
Yours is here.
